Biohaven licenses Japan and Asia rights to Graves’ disease candidate for $80 million upfront and 20% royalties

Biohaven has licensed its lead extracellular IgG degrader, BHV-1300, to Ono Pharmaceutical for exclusive development and commercialization across Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia. The deal brings Biohaven $80 million at closing, with an additional $20 million milestone payment expected within a year, plus royalties of approximately 20 percent on net sales in the licensed territory. Biohaven retains all rights outside the licensed region, including the US, Europe, and China.

BHV-1300 is currently in Phase 3 development for Graves’ disease. In a Phase 1b study, the small-molecule degrader produced reductions in the pathogenic autoantibody to the TSH receptor, rapid normalization of thyroid hormones, and symptom improvement, with a patient-friendly autoinjector for self-administration. The agreement also covers two next-generation follow-on candidates, BHV-1310 and BHV-1320.

What it means

The licensing deal validates Biohaven’s MoDE platform, a technology originating from Yale University research that targets disease-causing proteins in the extracellular space for degradation via the liver. This is the first regional collaboration for an extracellular protein degrader, suggesting the platform has cleared a clinical bar sufficient to attract a partner with Ono’s development and commercial scale in two major pharmaceutical markets. The $80 million upfront represents non-dilutive capital, reducing Biohaven’s need for equity financing while the company advances BHV-1300 through Phase 3.

The deal structure, upfront payment plus milestone plus royalties, indicates confidence in near-term regulatory progress. The $20 million milestone anticipated within a year likely hinges on Phase 3 data or a regulatory filing in the licensed territory. The 20 percent royalty rate is material to long-term value if BHV-1300 reaches market, though the company’s retained rights in the US, Europe, and China mean the largest markets remain under Biohaven’s control and upside.

The open question the announcement does not answer: whether Phase 3 data for BHV-1300 in Graves’ disease will replicate the Phase 1b efficacy and tolerability profile at scale. Graves’ disease is an autoimmune thyroid condition with limited approved treatments; if BHV-1300 shows durable benefit and a favorable safety profile in the pivotal trial, the molecule could address a genuine unmet need. The licensing to Ono does not guarantee regulatory approval or commercial success, only that a seasoned partner has committed capital and regional expertise to pursue it.

Watch for Phase 3 data disclosure or regulatory filings in Japan or South Korea within the next 12 to 18 months, which will determine whether the $20 million milestone payment is triggered and whether the royalty stream has a realistic path to revenue.
