Adobe names Chakravarthy CEO as Narayen steps to executive chair

Adobe’s board has named Anil Chakravarthy president and chief executive officer effective December 1, 2026, replacing Shantanu Narayen, who will become executive chair. Chakravarthy, who has led Adobe’s Customer Experience Orchestration business and worldwide field operations since 2020, is the first external hire to reach the CEO role at the company in its history under Narayen’s 23-year tenure.

The announcement carries no new financial guidance, revenue targets, or operating margin expectations. Adobe’s most recent filed results showed FY2025 revenue growth of 10.5% and operating margin of 36.6%. The company will host its Q3 FY2026 earnings call on September 10, two days after this filing, where management may address the leadership transition’s strategic intent and any forward outlook changes.

What it means

Chakravarthy’s appointment signals Adobe’s board believes the company’s next phase requires operational leadership shaped outside the organization. His six-and-a-half-year track record at Adobe centers on the Customer Experience Orchestration segment, a business he expanded through product launches including GenStudio and CX Enterprise Coworker, both positioned as AI-native tools. The board’s language emphasizes “agentic software” and “AI-driven era”, suggesting the new CEO’s mandate is to accelerate Adobe’s pivot toward autonomous AI agents embedded in creative and productivity workflows, a category still forming and where Adobe competes against Microsoft, Salesforce, and emerging startups.

Chakravarthy’s prior role as CEO at Informatica, a data management platform company, and his experience at Symantec and VeriSign indicate the board values someone with enterprise software scaling experience outside Adobe’s historical creative-tools core. That choice implies confidence that Adobe’s creative business (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere) is mature enough to run without the CEO’s daily attention, and that growth will come from expanding the enterprise and AI-driven segments where Chakravarthy built his Adobe reputation.

The open question the filing does not address: whether this transition reflects board concern about Adobe’s 10.5% revenue growth rate under Narayen’s final year, or whether it is a planned succession timed to Narayen’s tenure arc. Narayen’s move to executive chair, a role that typically carries advisory rather than operational authority, suggests continuity rather than crisis, but the earnings call on September 10 will be the first opportunity to hear management’s framing of the handoff and any changes to near-term strategy or margin expectations.
