Zoetis narrows revenue outlook as U.S. companion animal sales slide, raises profit guidance on margin strength

Zoetis cut its full-year revenue forecast to $9.220 billion to $9.320 billion, representing organic operational decline of 2 percent to 1 percent, while raising adjusted diluted earnings-per-share guidance to $6.25 to $6.35. The narrowed top-line outlook reflects persistent weakness in U.S. companion animal sales, offset by livestock strength that allowed the company to improve its profit trajectory.

Third-quarter revenue fell 1 percent on an organic operational basis to $2.4 billion, with U.S. segment revenue declining 6 percent to $1.2 billion. Companion animal revenue in the U.S. dropped 8 percent, driven by macro-driven price sensitivity, competitive pressure in dermatology, and generic competition. International segment revenue grew 4 percent to $1.1 billion, with livestock revenue increasing 9 percent on an organic operational basis, led by cattle and fish.

Adjusted diluted earnings per share rose 1 percent on an organic operational basis to $1.75, though adjusted net income fell 7 percent on the same basis to $720 million. The company raised its full-year adjusted net income guidance to $2.600 billion to $2.640 billion, representing organic operational decline of 7 percent to 5 percent, signaling that margin expansion is offsetting revenue headwinds.

What it means

Zoetis faces a structural challenge in its largest segment. U.S. companion animal revenue has contracted for at least two consecutive quarters, with the company attributing the decline to price sensitivity and competitive pressure in dermatology alongside generic competition. This suggests the market is not absorbing price increases and that Zoetis is losing share in a category where it historically commanded pricing power. The 8 percent drop in U.S. companion animal revenue is not a temporary comparison issue; the company’s own forward guidance implies continued contraction through year-end.

The livestock business is masking the underlying weakness. Livestock revenue grew 5 percent in the U.S. and 9 percent internationally on an organic operational basis, suggesting that cattle, swine, poultry, and fish producers are spending despite inflationary pressures. This portfolio breadth allowed Zoetis to raise profit guidance even as it cut revenue guidance, indicating that the company is improving margins through mix shift toward higher-margin livestock products and operational discipline.

The honest open question the filing leaves is whether U.S. companion animal weakness is cyclical or structural. The company attributes it to “macro-driven price sensitivity,” which implies consumers are trading down or deferring veterinary care. If that pressure persists through 2027, Zoetis will need to defend market share through innovation rather than pricing. The company did receive two major FDA approvals ahead of schedule this year, Convenia RTU for Dogs in October and an earlier approval, and expects additional launches in Q4 2026, but the filing does not quantify the revenue impact of these launches or whether they can offset the dermatology losses.

What to watch

Fourth-quarter results, due in early 2027, will show whether the new product launches and the livestock momentum sustain into the final quarter and whether U.S. companion animal stabilizes or continues to contract. The filing also signals that Zoetis expects select approvals originally planned for 2027 to arrive in Q4 2026, making the timing and commercial uptake of those launches the critical variable for 2027 guidance.
