Microsoft’s cloud acceleration outpaces overall growth as Azure surges 48 percent

Microsoft’s first-quarter revenue grew 19 percent to $92.3 billion, but the real acceleration lives in cloud. Microsoft Cloud revenue climbed 30 percent to $63.9 billion, with Azure alone jumping 48 percent. The gap between cloud growth and company-wide growth signals where Microsoft’s operational leverage is concentrating, and where the artificial intelligence investments are paying off operationally.

Operating income rose 21 percent to $45.9 billion. On a GAAP basis, net income jumped 32 percent to $36.6 billion and diluted earnings per share reached $4.92, up 32 percent. Stripping out a $207 million gain from OpenAI investments (against a $3.1 billion loss in the prior year), non-GAAP net income grew 18 percent to $36.4 billion and non-GAAP diluted earnings per share rose 18 percent to $4.89. The company did not raise or cut guidance in this filing; forward-looking statements will come on the earnings call.

What it means

The 48 percent Azure growth sits 29 points ahead of the company’s overall 19 percent revenue growth. That divergence is not noise. It means the installed base of cloud customers is both expanding and deepening consumption per customer. Microsoft Cloud revenue of $63.9 billion now represents roughly 69 percent of total revenue, up from 61 percent in the prior year quarter. The company is not just growing; it is reshaping its revenue mix toward higher-margin infrastructure and platform services.

The OpenAI accounting swing, from a $3.1 billion loss last year to a $207 million gain this year, inflates the GAAP net income growth to 32 percent. Strip that out and the underlying operational growth is 18 percent. That’s still solid, but it’s the cloud acceleration, not the bottom line, that tells the story of what’s working. Commercial remaining performance obligation hit $677 billion, up 73 percent, which suggests customers are committing to future consumption at a pace that outstrips current revenue recognition.

One honest gap: the filing does not disclose how much of Azure’s 48 percent growth comes from price increases on existing workloads versus new customer acquisition or expanded usage. It also does not break out revenue attributable to generative AI features specifically. Devices and Consumer revenue fell 3 percent, with Windows OEM and Devices down 22 percent, suggesting the consumer refresh cycle remains weak and enterprise AI adoption is not yet lifting PC sales broadly.

What to watch

The earnings call on October 28, 2026 will carry management’s forward guidance. Listen for commentary on Azure growth sustainability, the pace of generative AI feature adoption in Microsoft 365, and whether the 73 percent jump in commercial remaining performance obligation reflects durable customer commitment or front-loaded deal timing ahead of price changes.
